23rd Governor's Awards in the Humanities Citation, May 8, 2008: Rosemary Daniell
Ms. Rosemary Daniell, of Savannah, is an award winning author and founder of Zona Rosa, a series of local, national, and international writing workshops. A master teacher of story and creative writing, Ms. Daniell believes in the healing powers of literature and has introduced that power to aspiring authors from all walks of life. From schools to prisons, from mental hospitals to youth detention centers, Daniell has built literary communities for Georgians who would not have otherwise had access to such opportunities. She has also taught at colleges and universities; over 50 of her students are now published authors. She is greatly loved by her writing group members and highly respected by critics and literary peers. Ms. Daniell's books include poetry, two memoirs, a novel and two books on writing, The Woman Who Spilled Words All Over Herself and Secrets of the Zona Rosa. Her first memoir, Fatal Flowers, about growing up female and Southern, won the first Palimpsest Prize for a most requested out-of-print book.
