Living intensely involves risk. Some of the stories we have here involve taking risks and living with the consequences. Nancy Law tells us about two remarkable women who chose to live in the Alaskan wilderness with their sled dogs and to push the dogs and themselves hard enough to win the coveted Iditarod race. Nancy is our "lead dog" for this issue. Ravi Kumar continues his memories of life as a fighter pilot, a career in which he risked his life daily, and in this case, suffered a loss that was in some sense greater than losing his own life, for he has had to carry the memory of a comrade he could not save. Anne Lovett’s piece concerns the hazards we face day by day and shows how a conflagration seared her memory and changed her life.
